At your own Pace

Greetings, all!

So Comic Con, was a success – had the pleasure of meeting Andy Weir, author of “The Martian”, as well as director, John Milius!

Now that summer is winding down and many writers are gearing up for the writing season (several recent Twitter polls found Fall as the majority favorite season to write), I wanted to gain some consensus and share some tips…

Firstly, in some ways, I feel like the old habits of turning in assignments on time refuse to fade. However, as an author, you absolutely should never feel rushed. Your first draft is just that – your first. There is no hurry to produce that perfect ‘magnum opus’ that will speak to the world and make you famous. In fact, many famous authors didn’t even gain such status until far beyond college years.

Secondly, set a routine – but don’t over-set. Everyone has off-days and you want to set a minimum daily word goal that won’t seem like climbing Mt. Everest on a day when you feel like your world is crashing down around you. The specific amount is really up to you. Personally, I don’t work toward the often lofty goals posted by other authors on social media (2k daily is sometimes cumbersome with a full-time day job) – in fact, I don’t go by words at all, but instead by pages. Bare minimum of one page per day, with 2+ being the goal. For some reason, it just seems to go faster that way!

What are some daily/weekly word/page goals you all have set for yourselves?

  1. Can I simply just say what a relief to find someone who
actually understands what they’re talking about
on the web. You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
A lot more people ought to check this out and understand this side of the story.
It’s surprising you aren’t more popular given that you definitely possess the gift.

a little research on this. And he in fact ordered
me dinner due to the fact that I found it for him…
lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!!
But yeah, thanx for spending some time to talk
about this subject here on your site.
